My Seven-Minute, No-Cost Kitchen Transformation

I love the look of open shelving in a kitchen. To me, it’s a perfect marriage of form and function.

There is just something so simple and appealing about it that makes my heart go pitter pat.

Emily’s kitchen, Jones Design Company

Lauren’s kitchen, Pure Style Home

So I thought, “I could do that!”

Next thing I knew, I was rounding up all my white dishes, arranging them in my kitchen cabinets until I was happy.

Then I grabbed a screwdriver and got to work taking the doors off.

Yep. I took the doors right off the hinges.

And exactly seven minutes later, this is what I had:

 I. LOVE. IT.

It took almost no time at all and didn’t cost a cent.

I was so happy!

There’s only one problem…

…my husband hated it.

(gasp)

So, after we had a small argument calmly discussed it, I put the doors back on out of respect for him.

So now it looks like this again:

Which, for the record, I still like.

And no doubt I won’t have to worry about what the INSIDE of my cupboards look like before anyone pops over. Sigh.

Lessons learned:

  • in the future, ask your husband before you decide to remove ANY doors, and
  • after you’ve talked about it, don’t bring it up again. Ever.

Decorating is about taking risks. Tweaking and rearranging until you find what works for you (and your husband) is part of the fun.

For me, anyway:)

But as with anything in life – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

The Nester has dubbed today,  “National Take a Risk Day”. Join her over at her linky party for serious inspiration to take decorating risks in your home.

Although, you might want to at least run it by the other people who live in your home first;)

  1. I think your kitchen looks lovely with and without the cabinet doors on! I, also, have had to put something back to the prior way it was when my husband didn’t like it. I want us both to love how I decorate out home. A few weeks ago I took a bold risk by having my nephew help me remove a top hutch piece of our bedroom dresser. It wasn’t attached -it simply sat on the dresser and I had wanted to get rid of it for months! It was too dark and heavy! Removing it made such a huge difference in the room. I had purchased a print -a close-up of two horses- to put on the dresser. I love my bedroom so much more now, but I am still tweaking it. My husband likes it, too! And the hutch top already found a new home with a relative. I have been reading and enjoying your posts. Thanks for the inspiration! Debbie M. in Reno

    • Hi Debbie – thank you so much for your kind words! And I love it when I hear of how a simple change like that makes a huge difference – without spending any money. You love it, your husband likes it and you were able to bless a relative at the same time. Very, very cool. Kim

  2. I like the cupboards before and after (and before again). When you live with other people sometimes it’s hard to get them “on board” with your visions. I try and compromise with my husband as much as possible just so we both like the majority of our furnishings. Thanks for taking a risk and undoing it – I like the reality of it all!

  3. You need to train your husband that decorating decisions are “women’s work” 🙂 My husband and I have that arrangement (most of the time), although I have to say it’s taken over 30 years to train him.

    • Too funny! Now that you mention it, I don’t know who is training whom!!! 🙂

  4. Aww! I love them both ways! I have a kitchen with doors, I’d like it without but eh, whatcha gonna do. I have a really hard time remembering that my husband’s vote counts! 🙂 With him working away all week, I try something new and forget to mention it.. 🙂 Whoops. Good thing it hasn’t been any too crazy, he’d be quick to veto!

    Still a lover-ly kitchen!
    xo

    • Hi Rachelle – thanks for stopping by. I di learn my lesson and will at least get his opinion on any major” decorating decisions before I jump in head first. I guess I forget that he lives here too! PS I LOVE your blog!

  5. I love it! Too bad your hubby didn’t like it – I don’t think mine would have either. Oh well – it still looks really cute with the doors on!

  6. I like the no door look… so pretty! But much more important to have a husband that also loves it. My husband is pretty easy going with my ideas. Good thing because I come up with some crazy ones! 🙂

  7. Opps… I saw my blog link was wrong as my comment was going through. Just incase you wanted to see the crazy ‘risk’ I took! lol

  8. i totally love it!! i was a little skeptical when i started reading that you were just taking the doors off.. but then i was totally converted!! i wish i had a bunch of white dishes, i would totally do that! it’s too bad husband didn’t like it, it looked so fresh and pretty : )

  9. I am proud of you for trying!!
Maybe you can take off one door at a time till hubs warms up to it?
Or take some of the doors off the cabinets, and leave them on the rest, like in my kitchen?

I love open shelving, too, I have it in my basement cafe’:
    http://goodbyehousehellohome.blogspot.com/2010/12/operation-simple-christmas-decorating_22.html
I just painted the front door. My hubs hates it, too.
When he hates it, I know I am on the right track, because he is a geek, not a decorator 🙂
(I do try to please him, usually, by the way).
At least you took the risk!
    HUGS,
    ~me
P.S. I can’t believe you already have such awesome dishes inside your cupboards!

    • You are so sweet! Thank you for leaving a comment and for the encouragement. PS. This is from the same man who never even batted an eye when I painted our back entryway wall with BLACK chalkboard paint. Men and decorating…who knew?!

  10. Oh I love her kitchen too! I have shown my hubby this pics as my dream kitchen! I love how yours looked without the doors. Im sorry your hubby didnt like it, but I say good risk!!! 🙂

    • Thanks so much for stopping by to leave a comment! Thanks for the encouragement as I’m not normally a risk taker!

  11. I have open shelving in the kitchen ( it came that way) and I HATE it! The dishes you use everyday are ok but anything else is always dusty and has to be washed before you can use it. Glass doors I would love. Good post.

    • Way to look on the bright side:) I hate to dust anyway, so I definitely wouldn’t enjoy having to dust my dishes, too!

  12. Thanks for posting this. So often I have a great idea, then talk to hubs about it and it gets vetoed. I often wonder while looking at other blogs if those women’s husbands are either a-really supportive b-don’t care or c-get into a lot of fights! 🙂

    • I think what made him mad was that I didn’t ask his opinion first before I took the cabinet doors off. Oh well:)

  13. I’m with you – I never ask first, and then feel bad if my hubster hates whatever I’ve done….

For the record, it’s better to have only had them off for a little while so you didn’t get too used to it. We went “topless” about a year and a half ago and there’s no way I could ever go back 😉

P.S I agree with the other comment: looks great both ways!

    • The funniest part of it all is that he never noticed I put the doors back on!! Men…sheesh!

  14. Too funny! The Hubster and I have many discussions abt my projects around here!:) Most times I win but there are times I have to give in to the “This is my house too” whining!;)

    • I’m laughing because my husband said the same thing – this is my house too!!

  15. This cracks me up! Sometimes my hubby surprises me with his opinions on stuff around the house. At least it was easy to put the doors back on…and what a picture of a great marriage, making compromises and working together is what it’s all about!

    • Hi Gina – thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I totally agree that working together is the key!

  16. Your post is hilarious, it reminds me of my hubby and I. I like your kitchen both ways! Very Nice!!

    • Hi there, Noelle – thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I’m finding that I am not alone in compromising when it comes to decorating decisions:)

  17. Marital compromises – we’ve all been there. I like your kitchen both ways! My hubby has vetoed ideas of mine before but overall he lets me do as I like with decorating so I suppose a LITTLE opinion from him now and again is acceptable! You both have to live there and like it right? Good for you for trying it, and then putting them back on for him! 🙂

    • Hi there! You are too funny (about letting him have a LITTLE opinion now and then). I have to admit that I had an ulterior motive for putting the doors back on…I was so afraid that I would come home from grocery shopping one day and discover that he had painted our living room “honolulu blue” – the color of his absolute favorite team – the Detroit Lions!!

  18. Hey, I actually found your blog via The Nester and her risk link party. I saw your post and I couldn’t help but check it out! I have been considering taking the doors of our cabinets as well, but couldn’t imagine where I would put all of my ugly but necessary items! Love your guts. PS. My husband just leaned over and saw your picture and said “Absolutely not. That’s where I draw the line!” Maybe it’s a guy thing!!!

    • Too funny!!! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment:)

  19. I am not keen of open cupboards because of the way I cook. Maybe with a brilliant rangehood things my be different.

Love your blog and have added a link here: http://ezy4uhosting.com/wordpress-blog/2011/03/ezy4uhosting-has-partnered-with-ideas-woman/

  20. Your kitchen is lovely. I really like the “no doors” look, but I understand your dilemma. My husband hates that too. And you gotta compromise. Its a good thing you like it with doors too! Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Misty! Thank you so very much for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment! I totally agree with you…compromise is a very good thing!

  21. Something similar happened at our house. So we compromised, and now the dessert cups, cake stand, and drinking glasses are in an open cabinet, as well as the one with the plates and coffee cups. Everything else is closed. It looks great AND the husband actually agreed it’s nice to not have to wonder if a guest is going to find a messy cabinet while looking for a cup. (Plus this means I can’t rearrange every few weeks to confuse him!)

    • What a great idea – LOVE it! Now, where did I put my screwdriver?!

  22. You are so right – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Compromise is a BIG game around here!

    • Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment!

  23. i did this too, only i kept my doors off. 🙂

    http://liferearranged.com/2010/10/little-project-big-difference/

    • That’s OK, too! I just know my husband well enough to know that if I didn’t take the doors down, I might come home later to find one entire wall of our living room covered in Detroit Lions paraphernalia!!! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and for taking the time to leave a comment.

  24. LOL! You are a wise wife! Both are darling. Love your life philosophy on your blog title!
    Blessings,
    Gayle@The Old Parsonage

    • Hi Gayle – thank you so much for taking the time to stop by! While I don’t think I’ve arrived in the wifely wisdom department, I have learned a couple of things:)

  25. Kim-
I’m glad that you we’re a strong enough woman to know that you can respect Tom’s thoughts. I know how you feel sister!

    • Well, I do have an ulterior motive…I don’t want to come home and find a 15 foot inflatable Detroit Lion in the middle of our yard, ya know what I’m sayin?’!!
