Count your blessings

My sweet friend gave me a blessing jar.

It’s just a simple canning jar dressed up with ribbon and scrapbook paper, but it’s a beautiful reminder of that old, old hymn.

Do you remember it?

Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings, see what God hath done!

The hymn may be old, but the truth is timeless.

Inside that jar are little pieces of scrapbook paper. My friend asked me and another friend to write down what we’re thankful for and she will do the same.

The simple act of writing down my blessings has caused me to be a lot more grateful – and a lot less grumpy!

Since Thursday, I’ve written that I’m thankful…

  • for a new kitten friend (who almost has a name, btw)
  • that we didn’t have to buy a new dryer on credit
  • for a handy husband that is able to repair a fence damaged by a storm (saving us hundreds)
  • Tom received a clean bill of health from his yearly checkup
  • Tom had some unexpected paid time off, and he still has a job

What I’m learning is that when we focus, not on our problems, but on all of our blessings, life looks a whole lot better. When we focus, not on what we don’t have, but on all that we do have, we see how very much we’ve been given.

Could you try this for just one week?

If a jar isn’t your thing, what about using a small notebook instead. (You can get really cute ones in the dollar sections of Target or Michaels).

What are you thankful for?
